To ensure consistency in how the insurance industry deals with situations where a person is covered by two plans, the Canadian Health and Life Insurance Association (CHLIA) coordination of benefits guideline was created for insurance companies to follow.
If you have coverage with your employer plan and as a dependent with your spouse’s employer plan:
-
your employer plan pays your claim first.
your spouse's plan pays your claim second.
For dependent children when both parents have plans and their children are covered under both, the plan of the parent with the earlier birth date in the calendar year pays first.
When MyARTA Health Hub is processing a claim as secondary, we require the explanation of benefits from the primary plan to process the claim correctly. Please upload your explanation of benefits through your online account.
